Getting To, From, & Around Krabi

Krabi is easy to get to and to travel around.

PLANE

Within Thailand, you can fly into Krabi from:

  • Bangkok (both airports: Suvarnabhumi International/BKK and Don Muang/DMK)
  • Chiang Mai
  • Koh Samui

Internationally, there are regular flights from:

  • Singapore
  • Guangzhao, China
  • Shanghai, China
  • Penang and Kuala Lumpur (both airports), Malaysia.
  • Helsinki, Finland (in high season)

During the peak 'winter' season (November to March), charter flights operate from China provincial towns, Scandinavian country capitals, and Russian regional cities.

The Krabi Airport is a small passenger-friendly airport. It is modern and easy to navigate. With large windows and open spaces, it is light and spacious. There is a comfortable business class lounge for Thai International and Star Alliance Gold Members (Terminal 1 before Immigrations).

Because the Krabi airport is run by the Communications Ministry and not the Airport Authority, it is not as efficient or well run as the bigger airports.

The current terminals (2 connected buildings) have adequate facilities: bank, ATM machine, travel information, hotel booking, car rentals, book store, food & snack shops (Subway, Black Canyon Coffee), an Internet  Café, a good restaurant, a massage pavilion, and jewelry & handicraft counters. There is also a small left-luggage facility (ground floor of Terminal 1).

Car Rentals

  • Avis (with second office at Sheraton Hotel in Khlong Muang)
  • Budget
  • National
  • Hertz (only in Ao Nang)
  • Sixt

Hotel representatives meet passengers inside the terminal (if transfer arrangements have been made), and there are prepaid taxi services to anywhere in Krabi. An airport bus runs to Krabi Town and Ao Nang. The price to Krabi Town is Baht 90 per person.

The airport is about 13 kilometers/8 miles from Krabi Town.

If you plan to arrive in Krabi by private plane, make sure that arrangements have been made in advance as private aircraft land infrequently.

VANS & BUSES

Public air-conditioned buses run to/from Krabi from all the surrounding provinces on a regular schedule. Overnight (and one daytime) buses run between Bangkok 's Southern Bus Station and Krabi's Bus Terminal off the main highway, 3.5 kilometers from the center of Krabi Town. Seating ranges from 24 to 38 passengers. The buses are direct with good service. They stop for a dinner meal.

There are also private tour buses that go between Krabi and the Khao Sarn area of Bangkok. These carry more than 40, and the passengers have to change buses in Surat Thani. (Thai passengers are not allowed — this causes problems for mixed nationality couples.)

Public vans (yellow license plates) run to most of the surrounding provinces, also from the bus station.

TRAIN

The railway does not come directly to Krabi. You have to stop at Surat Thani, the Tung Song Junction in Nakorn Sri Thammarat, or at the Trang station.

CAR

Driving from Bangkok takes about 9 hours depending on the starting point and traffic in Bangkok. Except for about 15 kilometers/9 miles near Krabi, the highway is 4 lanes the entire way, with a good surface. It is not a freeway, so there are traffic lights in the major towns, but unless it is a long-weekend, the waits are not long. The trip is between 900 and 1,000 kilometers (560 to 620miles) depending on your route. Some of the route is scenic and some is boring.

All cars and vans licensed for public use have special license plates, which have black numbers on a green on yellow background. If the plate is white or a Krabi scene, these are 'black-plate' vehicles — they are not supposed to rented out or carry fee-paying passengers.
