Van & Bus Routes

Krabi has a new, modern bus terminal, locally know as Por Kor Sor. It is located on the outskirts of Krabi Town (4 kilometers out) in Talad Kao, on the main highway between Phuket and Trang. Food & drinks are available at the station. The Airport Bus stops at the Terminal as do the Song Taew 'buses' to Ao Nang. All the public minivans to other provinces start there. (None of the private tour vans stop.)

After dark, most buses do not come into the Terminal, but stop on the main highway at Talad Kao.

Overnight 'public' air-conditioned tour buses operate between Krabi and Bangkok. Their trip takes about 13 hours. The 24-passenger configuration (VIP Operated by Lignite Tour or the government bus cooperative, Por Kor Sor) is the most comfortable. The 38-passenger one is not too bad.

All the public tour buses are licensed through the government controlled Transport Company. Booking is still a primitive process with no Internet capabilities. It's all paper and must be done directly at the bus station or at the Lignite office in Krabi (near the City Hotel - be prepared for poor service). Tour Agents do not sell tickets for these buses.

Several private tour companies run trips from the Khao Sarn area of Bangkok. All of these stop in Surat Thani for a bus change. Thais cannot travel on these buses (licensing agreement), so if are traveling with a Thai, you have to take the government bus. Tour agents take bookings for these buses.

If you are coming from a nearby province (Phuket, Phang-Nga, Ranong, Satun, Trang, Surat Thani, Nakorn Sri Thammarat, and Haad Yai) inter-province air-conditioned buses run on fixed schedules, mostly in daylight hours. The schedules are available at the each town's bus station. They stop in major towns in between.

Air-conditioned 14-passengers vans also operate between the major centers in Krabi and other tourist locations: Ao Nang, Lanta, and Krabi Town. There vans must have yellow license plates to provide public service.

The public vans, which leave from various locations in Krabi Town, go to:

  • Phuket (Bus Terminal 2 on the northern edge of Phuket Old Town), stops in Phang-Nga
  • Surat Thani
  • Nakorn Sri Thamarat Town
  • Tung Song (Nakorn Sri Thamarat)
  • Trang
  • Satun
  • Haad Yai

Passengers buy tickets at the Bus Terminal). Seats on some routes (Phuket) can be booked in advance. Tour agents do not sell these tickets (if they do, they are adding on a service charge).

The private tour vans leave from the offices of the tour operators (sometimes on the outer edge of Krabi Town). When you leave Krabi, they provide a pickup service, but when they arrive, they dump you at their office (sometimes far from town). These vans run between Krabi and:

  • Hua Hin (changing vans in Surat Thani)
  • Bangkok (Khao Sarn area)
  • Phuket City and Main beach areas
  • Khao Lak and Khao Sok (in Phang-Nga province)
  • Surat Thani
  • Haad Yai
  • Satun

Tour agents can sell tickets for these private vans. The price to buy a ticket directly from the operator and an agent should be the same.

WARNING: When traveling in vans and buses, ALWAYS keep you valuables in a small bag that is with you at all times. This is specially true to Samui, Phangan, and Tao Islands. On the operators where your bus goes on the ferry and the passengers to to a lounge, there have been many problems with items being stolen from un-watched bags.

Travel to Samui, Phangan, and Tao Islands

To get to Koh Samui from Krabi, travel is by van, bus, and ferry. Some of the transfers are efficient and other are not. There are multiple operators, some much better than others. From Krabi, included in the ticket price, you will be picked up and taken to a staging area — usually the operators offices — for transfer to a bus. For the daytime ferries to Samui, Phangan, and Tao Islands, the bus goes to the pier at Don Sak in Surat Thani where the ferry docks. Ticket prices should include all sectors of the journey.

The overnight ferries leave from a different pier near Surat Thani town, so the transfers are made there.

The Ferries to these islands are often late, so don't operate on tight schedules (i.e leave plenty of extra time to catch flights).
